Why did many athletes forfeit their medals they won?

All sprinters in 100 meter final at the 2000 Sydney Olympics were charged with administration of anabolic steroids. Can you imagine it? Although many things were done to prevent administration of performance-enhancing drugs in sport, it is not free from these drugs.
BALCO founder Victor Conte said in an interview about administration of steroids by the sprinters in 100 meter final at the 2000 Olympics. Maurice Greene, Ato Boldon, Obadele Thompson, Darren Campbell, Dwain Chambers, Aziz Zakari, Jon Drummond and Kim Collins applied performance-enhancing drugs.
Victor Conte confirms that Dwain Chambers, the British sportsperson, used steroids. Conte supplied these preparations to Chambers in 2003. As it was found out, Chambers took tetrahydrogestrinone.
Maurice Green, the American sprinter, administrated steroids, testosterone cream, EPO and certain stimulants. Angel Guillermo Heredia reported that he had provided these products to Maurice Green. But it is important to mention that this American athlete began to purchase these preparations from Heredia after he had received 2 medals in Olympics.
Although the founder of the BALCO doesn’t know about all nuances linked with possession and administration of steroids by these all sportspersons that took part in the Sydney Olympics, he assures that performance-enhancing drugs had an immense role at the women’s 100 meter final of the 2003 Championship in France. Conte sold steroids to five of the finalists.
Kelly White, the winner, got the banned drugs from Conte too. After it was found out that she had used Modafinil, she lost her gold medals. Later Kelly White said that she had applied tetrahydrogestrinone and the blood booster EPO.
Conte wasn’t surprised about the progress of anti-doping agencies related to steroids in sport.
