Role of inhaled steroids for children with asthma

Inhaled steroids are typically prescribed for treatment of persons with early stages of asthma complications.
According to some recent researches, one can increase the typical does of inhaled corticosteroids by 8 times, but benefits will be not increased in such situation. Ejaz Yousef, a specialist that has been involved in these researches, confirms that if a physician sees that medical position of a patient worsens, he/she can advise taking oral steroids instead of increasing the quantity of inhaled steroids. Enhancing the quantity of inhaled steroids is not without any unwanted reaction. This aspect causes various side consequences. For example, the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis can be suppressed under such circumstance.
Administration of inhaled steroids was considered to be alternative to using oral products. It was in 1997. It was advised to indicate inhaled steroids as alternatives of oral medicines which are effective for persons with asthma exacerbations.
Later, some researches have manifested that application of enhanced quantities of inhaled corticosteroids systematically doesn’t enhance positive effects.
Yousef and his colleagues have conducted a research which involved almost 200 children of 2-17 years. These kids were cured with inhaled corticosteroids during 3 months. They were chosen randomly for treatment for a period of 12 days. Any child that suffered from asthma exacerbation was given inhaled steroids. Then the results were evaluated by the experts.
No any kid that smoked, had symptoms of chronic asthma or lung pathology was involved in the study.
Patients needed to inform about their unwanted reactions via telephone within 72 hours. So, it was reported about cough during nighttime, wheeze, shortness of breath and intolerance when it comes to exercises. Every result was evaluated according to a score which was ranged from 0 to 4. 0 meant no any effect; 4 meant the most enhanced severity level.
Only four children out of 82 the kids that were given high dosages of inhaled steroids had to apply systemic corticosteroids. 2 of them were given doubled doses; others two were applying the measure which was more increased by 8 times than a normal one.
According to the results of the research, usefulness of the preparations, placebo effect, supervision of physicians and treatment of persons during early stages of asthma exacerbation were responsible for getting positive results.
This as well as other studies manifest that not every story about steroids is linked with abuse and usage of them by athletes. Steroids are useable for many medical purposes.
